Marine Microplankton Ecology Reading

چکیده
Microbes dominate our planet, especially the Earth’s oceans. The distinguishing feature of microorganisms is their small size, usually defined as less than 200 micrometers (μm); they are all invisible to the naked eye. As a group, sea microbes are extremely diverse, and extremely versatile with respect to their abilities to make and eat food. All marine microbes are too small to swim against the current and are therefore classified as plankton. First we will discuss several ways to classify marine microbes.

Occurrence of the rare microflagellates Prorocentrum arcuatum Issel and Hermesinum adriaticum Zacharias in the marine Lake Rogoznica (eastern Adriatic coast)
The marine Lake Rogoznica is a small, karstic habitat with potential anthropogenic influence, situated in the eastern-central Adriatic coast. In this naturally eutrophic, hypoxic and periodically anoxic lake, an investigation of the microplankton community was performed during the 19951998 period when the ecology of the lake was greatly influenced by strong stratification and the appearance of ...
متن کاملEffects of Lugol’s fixation on the size structure of natural nano–microplankton samples, analyzed by means of an automatic counting method
Accurate abundance and biomass measurements are essential steps for determining the role of nano– microplankton in the microbial food web. Owing to practical constraints, traditional microscope analysis of nano–microplankton requires preservation; but preservatives alter plankton samples and bias the measurements. The majority of studies on the effects of preservation have been based on cell cu...
متن کاملAn imaging-in-flow system for automated analysis of marine microplankton
Present automated systems for counting and measunng marine plankton include flow cytometers and in situ plankton video recorders. Neither of these approaches are optimal for the microplankton cells which range in size from 20 to 200 pm and can be fewer than 104 1". We describe here an instrument designed for rapid counting, imaging and measuring of individual cells and particles in the micropla...
متن کاملHydrostatic Pressure and Temperature Effects on the Membranes of a Seasonally Migrating Marine Copepod
Marine planktonic copepods of the order Calanoida are central to the ecology and productivity of high latitude ecosystems, representing the interface between primary producers and fish. These animals typically undertake a seasonal vertical migration into the deep sea, where they remain dormant for periods of between three and nine months. Descending copepods are subject to low temperatures and ...
متن کاملThe metabolic response of marine copepods to environmental warming and ocean acidification in the absence of food
Marine copepods are central to the productivity and biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems. Nevertheless, the direct and indirect effects of climate change on their metabolic functioning remain poorly understood. Here, we use metabolomics, the unbiased study of multiple low molecular weight organic metabolites, to examine how the physiology of Calanus spp. is affected by end-of-century global war...
